CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I didn’t know what had just happened. The two guards had just fallen where they had been standing. The redheaded one still had his hand bunched up in a fist.

I sank to my knees beside them. The sizzling sound of bacon drew my eyes to the back of their necks. Their skin had been burned badly. It looked as though it had happened from the inside out.

I shook my head to myself. It didn’t make any sense. I’d seen the burn patches before. I’d been the reason that those burns had appeared before. Their chips had been deactivated, but why?

“What, what happened?” Natasha stuttered nervously. Her eyes were glued to the two guards. She had a mixed look of doubt and fear in her eyes. She didn’t move. I wasn’t sure whether she even could.

“They’ve been deactivated,” I told her, as I stood back up. “The back of their necks are burnt. I’ve seen it before, so I’m pretty sure I’m right.”

“So, they’re dead?”

I nodded. “They died the instant their chips went out.”

“Do you think it was painful?”

I wasn’t sure how to answer that. It was a question that I hadn’t been expecting Natasha to ask. The truth was that I wasn’t sure whether it was painful. The only thing I could be sure of was that people feared it happening to them.

“I think that they would have done their best to kill us if it hadn’t happened.”

She nodded. She knew I was right. She knew it was stupid to be worried over whether they have suffered. “What do we do now?” she asked.

“How long do you need to finish the deactivator?”

She frowned at me and then turned her eyes to the ground. “That’s the thing,” she dug her foot into the earth with a heavy kick. “It’s not going to be as simple as I first thought.”

I could feel my stomach starting to drop. Our entire plan relied on Natasha turning off the chips. We needed to be able to fight back against the council. We had no chance of doing that if they could kill us all at the press of a button.

“What’s the problem?” I asked her directly.

“I’m going to need some power. The thing is ready to use, but the batteries died while I was testing it.” She flapped her hands helplessly. “I had to do it! If I hadn't tested it we wouldn't have know did it work. But now the power is gone. Anyhow, if we are going to send out a radio wave strong enough to break the chip connections, then I’m going to need lots more than battery power.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?” I asked in frustration. “Where are we going to get power from? We can’t go back to the city. They would have me arrested as soon as I got close to the gates.”

“It’s okay,” Natasha said quickly. I think she could see that I was only seconds away from having a full breakdown. “There’s a small village a few miles away from here.
